Many years ago I had doodled a Santa Claus from a Coca Cola ad on the back of a National Geographic magazine and I thought it could use some colour (also a long time ago). It was one of the first times I tried to paint in a more realistic style and being the novice I am, I was staggered at the many hues you could find in a cheek alone- reds, yellows, pink, a touch of light magenta, a dash of brown here and there. Makes me wonder where did all those tones come from... especially considering that Santa here is essentially a padded self portrait.
(PS- Like a previously posted fire chief, this was painted in Photoshop... will post some real-world paintings later on)
